Reviewing the Footage

Filming Schedual

Filming Schedule

To inform both my actors of the filming schedule i wrote them both a joint email so that any enquiries could be handled quickly. likewise they will be able to see each others response which could further inform the other recipient on any changes in plans. This will make the communication process more efficient as I will not have to constantly update the other performer on changes concerning the other performer

UV Makeup Designs

Design 1: Half Face Pattern

Whilst looking at different designs from the internet and general face paint ideas i decides to draw a simple template of the design i was going to practice before the Filming so that I knew what would look good considering this was the first time i was using UV face paint.

I chose to use mainly swirls and rounded shapes so that it could resemble tribal face paint . This would be to give an exotic alternative look to my Music video that will also be used to resemble a club atmosphere using the bright lights.

Under the UV light the design looked much better thank expected and really made the pattern more exaggerated which enhanced the Overall club atmosphere.

 Design 2 : Full Face

For my second design i experimented using a a full face pattern so that the face looked complete and still looked like a person rather than a figure with half a face.

Using a full face of makeup is also beneficial for the partiality of filming as i have more of shots and camera angles i can use. This means I don't just have to film from one side for the makeup to be appreciated.

Location Recce

Location Recce:

Location In Spain:

Although finding locations in foreign countries was a bit difficult, the fact that i was going to my holiday home meant that i knew the whole town very well and knew exactly the type of places I am thinking  of filming in. I am also open to finding and experimenting in locations that I haven't specifically found but that we may encounter as the music video is meant to resemble a perfect holiday that the main character never got to experience.

Locations For Beginning and Lipsyncing:

Target Audience

Target Audience Profile:

Nicole Stevens

Age: 19 years old

I decided to display my target audience profile using a Intagram format as instagram is often used as a way to express yourself and to have the ability to tell your friends your interests and oppinions on things.

I also chose to display my target audience profile used instagram so that I can add pictures as well as commenting on these pictures as well as also showing that Nicole is fond of social media and is interested in mainstream trends.
If 'Nicole Stevens' was a real individual this is what her instagram would look like.

Genre Research

Genre Research

Main Conclusions:

From my genre research I can take away the overall tone that is needed to make successful tropical house music video by my developed understanding for the need of vivid florescent colours, tropical locations and hot weather among many others. Themes of fun and holiday is also essential but I need to avoid making the video look like it is just a holiday I filmed rather than a music video filmed in an exotic country. Club setting are also key features that denoted vibrancy and playfulness through its iconic coloured lights.

Using this new knowledge I will create a Music video that will incorporate many of the conventions of the tropical house music genre

Three Types of music videos

Three Types Of Music Videos

The music videos that I looked at were:

Narrative: Justin Timberlake - 'What goes around, Comes back around'
The music video focused on the relationship between two characters where they fall in love. As the song continues we see that the female character has been unfaithful which ultimately results in her death. The music video Does have a performance element despite being heavily narrative based where Justin is in a classic looking casino singing to a audience.

Conceptual: Pink - 'Try'
This particular music video is clearly conceptual yet it does follow a symbolic narrative. The narrative is expressed through contemporary dance which is a powerful use of movement to portray love and affection as well as hate. The conceptual element is the fact the story is connoted through dance which is a also accompanied by the use of paint splatter which is increased through the music video.

Performance: Beyonce - 'Best thing I never had'
98% of this music video is performance based and includes different locations and props. Although the concept is basic it still does portray a narrative by the outfit of a wedding underwear which symbolises a relationship and purity. The use off different locations also made the visuals more ascetically pleasing so it wasn't repetitive.

Britney Re-creation video Exercise + Reflection

The filming of the Recreation

Due to having the whole class as the crew members, we created a casting, costume, location, props, filming schedule and technical roles table so that we could refer to everyones role during the filming session. This meant that everything was organised and everyone new their role.

  •  I volunteered for the role of Britneys back up dancers
  • This meant that i had to learn the dance routine well as remembering the shot lists as i had to direct the actors to where they had to look and go
  • Due to having a shot list, this was very easy as i could clearly direct people into place.

  • This sheet was also very useful as i was informed of the filming date and time so that i knew when i had to Bring props and costume.
  • The sheet also helped by letting us be organised when trying to bring in the props we needed as it reminded us what we needed.

Filming Difficulties

  1. The first difficulty that we had to over come was the fact the we didn't have a dolly to use for the first shot that was a tracking shot towards the main characters foot. We managed to over come this by placing the camera on the floor and just sliding it towards the subject, although this was not idea, the flat surface of the floor meant it moved smoothly
  2. Another difficulty we faced was that the actress playing Britney Spears was left handed and could not twiddle her pen using her right hand. This meant that I had to step in as her 'arm double' and play with her pen for her. We managed to make this look realistic as i put my arm through the sleeve of her cardigan as she put her arm behind her back.
  3. Another difficulty was that the main actress playing Britney kept looking into the camera which ruined the continuity of the video.
  4. The dance choreography was another element that posed a challenge. This was because we were not professional dancers therefore we were not all in time. Despite this we re filmed several of the shots until it was almost perfect. this made me learn that it is just clear direction and practice.

Reflection on Editing:

Through this exercise i developed some of my editing skills further by focusing on the matching of the lip syncing and the music. At first this was very difficult as the actress seemed slightly uncomfortable singing at certain points so the timing of the lipsync and the sound track was off. I managed to change this by speeding up the motion of the footage to go a few milli seconds faster , meaning it then was in time with the pace of the music

I also developed my understanding of 'cutting to the music' as i had to do this multiple time through out the re creation. This taught me that every beat of a song often means cutting to a new shot. This is often done in fast paced music videos to reflect the bouncy fun atmosphere of the music.

What have I learnt?

  • Through filming this recreation, I have learnt that there is a lot more footage within a music video than expected. This is because, the director wants to reflect the music and in order to do this it often has to cut to different shots with each beat or each couple of beats. This is a good tip to use within my Music video because now I am equally aware that If i pick a slow paced song the shot durations would inevitably be slower if i wanted to reflect the song structure.
  • I have also learnt the Huge importance in lipsyncing if i want my music video to be successful. If the artists mouth movement does not fit in time with the sound track then this will look messy and wrong. This would be one of the first things that people would notice.
  • Another Thing that i have learnt is the Importance of having a confident, vibrant, bubbly Actor that fits the part of the music. For example if a Goth type person was to play the character of Britney, this would not match the audio as the sound track is very upbeat and happy. Likewise If the Actor is not confident then they will show as awkward on camera. This also means that the audience will not be able to relate to the artist, making my music video unsuccessful.

Finding a Song

Finding a Song

After I found the song on Sound Cloud, I emailed the artist and asked If I could have permission to use his sound track of a remix between 'Alex Adir - 'Make Me feel Better' and DJ Snake - 'Talk', a tropical house mix.

The artist seemed keen to help me and granted me the permission i asked for.
