Introduction to music videos

Types of Music videos: 

1. Performance based music video
2. Conceptual base music video
3. Narrative based music video


Performance Based:


  • When the performer confidently showcases their talent in their video
  • A typical setting would be inside a studio, costumes would be extavagent or unsuitable for everyday use
  • The performer would have strong interaction with the camera. 
  • Body movement and style of the music video will be mainly literal, 
  • No metaphorical message would be established 

Conceptual Based 

  • Astetically would have an abstract and artistic/ alternative approach to to what is shown to the audience. 
  • Main componants to making conceptual music video: special effects, CGI or props. 
  • Strong metaphorical message - or no message at all. 

Narrative Based:

  • When the video portrays a story that that strongly relate to the lyrics. 
  • Setting, costume, body language and acting would portrayed as realistic. 
  • No or limited interaction with the camera, to create a gaze for the audience.
